A friend asked me today (before I started this Blog)...
" I get quite poor cell service at my house. Wondering... do you know? do the newer phones tend to pick up signals better? Or is it all based on the service provider?"
Although phones vary from one model to the next, they all have to meet certain power and receive levels for a service provider. Each service provider's requirements are different some prefer phones with better receivers, some prefer phones that have more powerful transmitters.
Cell phones and Smartphones are constrained in how well they work by a few things.
- the size of the phone
- the battery life requirements
- the technology the phone uses, (2G or 3G, CDMA vs GSM/UMTS)
- Government regulations
and in some cases how you hold the phone :).
Ok so what is the best way to pick a new phone? (pick a BlackBerry)...
No for real... take a look at what you want and where you live and will be doing most of your use. Grab a few friends that have phones you like or might like and bring them to your home or where ever you might want to use it the most make sure they are on different providers / Carriers and see how they work.
If none of them work well at your home etc then you might want to think of adding Wireless internet to your home (WLAN) if you don't already have it and get a phone with WLAN capabilities...
WLAN is also sometimes called WI-FI or 802.11.
